ROTARY AWARD FOR JOHN ROBINSON REID

At Added Valuation we are very proud of John Reid, who was on Thursday (25 June 2020) awarded the Paul Harris Award by Rotary for his continued commitment to the success of Taradale Rotary.  John makes an incredible contribution to Rotary, and we know this award is well deserved.  Here is the citation at his award presentation:

John Reid was born in Wellington in 1961 and moved to Rotorua aged 6. Educated at Rotorua Boys High School and Lincoln University where he graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Valuation and Property. John joined the Government Valuation Department (now Quotable Value Ltd), Napier in 1982 and remained with Valuation New Zealand/Quotable Value Ltd until 1999. In 1999 John completed a degree in Master of Property Studies Lincoln University his thesis being ‘What is the future for the Central City Retail Sector in Provincial New Zealand’. John set up his own valuation and advisory practice in 1999, John Reid & Associates Limited and has subsequently been a Consultant valuer with LoganStone Ltd. and Added Valuation Ltd.

Married to Ruth since 1985 they have three sons Mark, Kurt and Scott and three grandchildren.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND ACHIEVEMENTS

John joined the Rotary Club of Taradale on 16 October 2001. He has held many positions within the club – Treasurer: 2004-2007, President: 2011-2012, Director:2010/2011 – 2013/2014, Chairman: Kelvin Tremain Memorial Educational Trust: 2012 & still holds this position, Chairman: Town Hall (current). District Foundation Committee: 2019-2020.

John received Paul Harris Fellow Awards for contributions to the foundation 2014/2018/2019.

Past Board of Trustees for Pakowhai School (6 years), Secretary/Treasurer of Pakowhai War Memorial Board, Board member of local church. John’s sporting attributes centre around golf where, from the age of 12 became the school junior golf champion and represented Bay of Plenty at school level, Intermediate Club Champion in 1979, Bay of Plenty Champion of Champions, Canterbury Junior Golf Team. He held the Intermediate Golf Champion title at the Napier Golf Club in 1987. John plays off an 8 (was 4) and had his first hole in one in July 2002.

Hawkes Bay Branch Committee of the Property Institute of NZ John has served on the local branch committee for many years including acting as Secretary. He was Branch Chairman for the period 2005 – 2008.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

John is a highly regarded and respected registered valuer and his clients include Government Departments/Agencies, local councils, Banks, District Health Boards and NZ Public and Privately owned companies.

Notable valuation assignments include: In May 2019 John appeared as an expert witness before the Waitangi Tribunal in Wellington in connection with an Iwi claim relating to the Maraeti Dam and Power Station near Mangakino, owned by Mercury NZ Ltd. John was appointed by the Crown to provide valuation advice in respect of the land claim as well as the value of the Power Station as an operating entity (value in excess of 1 billion dollars). This is a highly specialised field and John was the only valuer called to give evidence.

John has been retained as a consultant/valuer by Whakatane District Council in respect of contentious property issues. These involved strategic valuation advice and peer review of valuations of flood damaged properties at Matata being purchased by council. Also reporting on various options for the Ohope Holiday Park and reporting to council on their leasehold land portfolio.

Regular valuations for Hastings District Council for insurance and financial reporting (> 700 million) and similar valuations for Hawke’s Bay District Health Board (> 500 million).

In 2016 Valuation advice to Iwi (Ngati Porou) in respect of a portfolio acquisition involving in excess of 1,000 properties owned by Housing NZ in Gisborne/East Coast.

In 1998 John was a member of a five-person task force engaged by the Fiji Government. The project included a strategic and financial analysis of state-owned land (including 13,500 ground leases) and the assessment of potential disposal options. John provided the valuation strategies, high level input on values and the financial analysis.

John has given a lot to both the community and is a committed Rotarian.
